Most of the Maui bird photos used for this Maui bird guide were provided by Janine Russell. A huge mahalo to Janine Russell! If you would like to see more of her beautiful photography, her galleries can be found at webshots and Better Photo. For more information about Maui bird watching, you can visit the Hawaii Audubon Society.

Loved your photos. I was looking for a bird I saw on Maui back in It was feeding at a feeder along with finches. It was larger than the finches and had a short, thick beak. It's most striking feature was the black and white ladder pattern on its back. I have searched for his bird in numerous books and websites to no avail. I'm hoping you. The biodiversity of the native plants and animals that live in the Hawaiian islands is breath-taking. On the northern and eastern sides of the islands, where the trade winds drop their moisture on upsloping hills and mountainsides, luxuriant rainforests contain a profusion of species of trees, shrubs, birds.
